Yoga Mudra

A mudra ( seal) is a symbolic or ritual gesture in Indian religious. While some mudras involve the entire body, most are performed with hands and fingers. Mudra is “spiritual gesture” and energetic “seal of authenticity” employed in the iconography and spiritual practice of Indian religious and Taoism. 

            Mudras are arm, hand and body positions used in the traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism. The great Buddha knew the use of mudras and is often depicted using these ritual gestures. Various Kung Fu forms contain positions identical to these mudras. 108 mudras are used in regular Tantric rituals. Mudras are also used in Indian Classical Dance. There are over 200 mudras in ‘bharatnatyam, and over 250 in ‘mohaniyattam’.

                Mudra Therapy is non-medical mode to treatment which helps without harming. Mudras are various postures of fingers and thumbs. In mudra therapy, different diseases are treated by holding and retaining the fingers and thumbs in different ways. This is simple measure surprisingly restores a state of balance in body and raises the level of the performers resistance. With the patients immunity thus strengthened, the disease has no other option but to flee.

               The universe is composed of five basic elements: space (or ether), air, fire, water and earth. In Ayurvedic terminology, these are called aakash, vaayu, agni, jal and prithvi, respectively. Being a miniature universe, the human body, too, is composed of the same five elements. 

                 According to the yogic science, the human body comprises of five basic elements- the Pancha Tattvas. The five fingers of the hand are connected to these vital elements in the body. These mudra yoga techniques stimulate different areas of the brain.

              Practicing the different types of mudras for health is considered good as it provides physical, mental, as well as spiritual benefits. The mudras benefit the bio magnetic fields, psyche, body, and mind in many ways. The mudras clear the psychic centers and subtle channels in the body. This allows the life force to flow freely to the various parts of the body. The mudras purify the body’s bio magnetic field and shield it from negative forced. The purpose of mudras is to bring about a complete regeneration and transformation of the body-mind principle and an expansion of the consciousness.
